Just today saw this and have to write something. I remember NOLA and the Hopstetters with fond memories and many chuckles. May god have eased your sorrow by this time and leave you with many fond memories. Jim and Dee

Dear family,
Sadly i found out about this only now.
We met Gene & Jinny in Dingle, Ireland. In 1997. It was a brief encounter at the B&B but we had some fun stuff going on. Gene certainly had a sense of humour.
We were hoping to meet them in The Netherlands or US one day, but plans changed all the time.
Wishing strength and courage for the family.

I just received this sad news yesterday. I regret not staying in touch as much as I should have in recent years. Gene was one of my greatest mentors both professionally and in life. He was a character! His sense of humor elevated all of his colleagues. I will miss our talks (and jokes!). My deepest condolences to his friends and family. He was a great human being and friend. Rest In Peace Gene.

So sad to learn about this. We used to talk for hours on the radio. We had the honour of meeting Gene & Jinny when we visited the States a few years ago, and on their visit to the UK a few years later. You were a true gentleman sir & our thoughts & prayers go out to the family.

Brother, you will always be with me in my heart and thoughs as I remember our youth when life was less complicated. Your family, Navy Shipmates, and friends enjoyed your sharp witty sense of humor and will always smile when remembering our time spent with you. Rest In Peace, your loving brother Mel.
