Obituary

       Elmer Smith, 94, of Milan, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville, Indiana. He was born on March 12, 1929 in Knox County, Kentucky, the son of John and Nannie (Jones) Smith.

       He married his late wife Verna (Swafford) Smith on October 9, 1948 and she preceded in death on July 1, 2009.

       Mr. Smith was a proud farmer as well as a former employee of Chrysler and Hill-Rom. He enjoyed being active, with favorite activities including tending to his garden, going for long bike rides, and tending to his lawn.

       Survivors include three daughters, Doris (Mark) Cook of Sunman, Darlene (Timothy) Aust of Holland, PA, and Arlene (Victor) Lee of Cortlandt Manor, NY; siblings: Susan (m. Orville) (Smith) Warren, Louisa (Smith) Crawford, Annabell (m. Bob) (Smith) Lewis, Bernice (m. Bob) (Smith) Tillman, Reed (m. Syreda) Smith, Richard (m. Ethel) Smith, and John (m. Debbie) Smith; grandchildren: Dana (Scott) Burton, Mitchell and Madeline Lee, Caroline Aust, and Jason Cook; and one great-grandchild, Claire Burton, and his favorite cat Stormy.

       He was preceded in death by siblings William Smith, Martha (Smith) Mills, Beve Clark “BC” Smith, Anderson Smith, and Dexter Smith.

       Funeral services will be held at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan at 1:00 PM, on September 16, 2023 with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until the time of services also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the New Craven Cemetery in Milan. Flowers may be received at the funeral home or memorials may be given in honor of Elmer to the Donor’s Choice. The only stipulation that Elmer has for his funeral was, “Don’t bury me in a suit.” He’s not dressing up for you, so there’s no need for you to dress up for him!
