Thomas "Tom" Bruns Obituary

Thomas A. Bruns, age 73 of Milan, was received into the kingdom of heaven on Monday, February 7, 2022.  Born in St Bernard, OH on Monday, June 14, 1948, he was the son of Bernard and Margaret Bruns nee Anderson. Each year on his birthday, he reminded us that everyone should put out a flag to celebrate. He married Alice Abner on June 12, 1993 who survives.

He will be deeply missed by his beloved children and bonus children; Lori (Greg) Holt, Amy (Tom Sheckels) Williams, Chris (Jodi) Bruns, Stacie (Kip) Miller, Joel (Carol) Bruns, Neysa (Tom Ahaus) Herndon, Tawnya (Eric) Herndon-Holtegel, Erin (Jason) Herndon-Barth. Tom leaves an amazing legacy of 20 grandkids and 6 great-grandkids. He made each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel so loved.

If you have ever met Tom, you are sure to have a Tom Bruns story or Tom Bruns-ism. The life of every party, he entered every room with a smile, a story, or a joke. Tom loved Jesus, his family, fishing, and sharing his story of recovery through faith. Tom had recently celebrated 32 years of sobriety. He was a huge fan of cheering on the Cincinnati Reds, singing - and man he could sing, ridiculing referees, and making outrageous purchases - the funniest being the “backward-trotting” horse for his three-acre yard. A true character and presence to all of his friends and family.  And - he never kissed anyone’s bum for a fishing license.

Throughout Tom’s life, he worked in repairs and maintenance for Myers TV in Milan and the GloryBee in Osgood and retired from Margaret Mary Hospital on January 11, 2013.  In his retirement, he continued working with the assisted living facilities in Milan and simply loved helping others. He became ordained in 2008 so that he could perform marriages for family members, and he was active in the Southeastern Indiana Emmaus Community.

In addition to his family, Tom is survived by his brother Bob (Suzanne) and Mike (Marlena) Bruns and his sister Pat Bonnlander. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bill and Jean Bruns, his sister Janet Bonnlander and many in-laws.

The family invites you to pay tribute to an extraordinary life by attending the visitation on Thursday, February 10 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM and funeral service on Friday, February 11 beginning at 11:07 AM at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan, Indiana.

Memorials may be made to Bridge of Hope Celebrate Recovery or the Milan Housing for the Elderly.
